Baker, et al, reported on the association between body mass index (obesity or not) and the outcomes of total knee joint replacement. The researchers found that patients derive equivalent functional benefit following total knee replacement irrespectively of their preoperative BMI. The significance of this is that the study argues against denying surgery based solely on a person’s BMI (obesity level). (Baker, et al in JBJS 2012, Vol. 16, pages 1501-1508.)
